Why convert HEIC to WebP?
HEIC is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It compresses well but is not supported by most browsers or web tooling โ uploading an HEIC to a blog, a forum or many image hosts often results in an "unsupported format" error. Converting to WebP gives you the same kind of modern compression and quality with universal browser support.
WebP is the natural target on the web: it ships with Chrome, Firefox, Safari (14.1+), Edge, and is recognized by every modern CMS and image CDN. Re-encoding HEIC to WebP gets you out of Apple-only territory without going back to the heavier JPG.
Does it strip GPS data?
Yes. HEIC files from iPhones carry rich EXIF metadata including precise GPS coordinates, camera serial, lens information and timestamps. All of it is removed automatically during conversion. The WebP you download contains only image data โ safe to publish or share without leaking your location.
How the converter works
- Drop or select the HEIC files from your iPhone or Mac (up to 20 MB each).
- We decode HEIC with libheif and re-encode as WebP at quality 80 by default.
- Download the WebP ready to embed anywhere on the web.
If the original was a Live Photo (HEIC + video), only the still image is converted.
