Why convert images to WebP or AVIF?

WebP and AVIF are the two best modern image formats for the web. They use newer compression โ€” derived from the VP8 and AV1 video codecs respectively โ€” to deliver the same visual quality as JPG or PNG with significantly smaller files. For typical photographic content, a JPG converted to WebP shrinks by 25โ€“35% while an AVIF version of the same image is often 40โ€“55% smaller.

Both formats support transparency (so they replace PNG cleanly for icons, logos and UI graphics) and are decoded natively by every modern browser โ€” Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14+ (16.4+ for AVIF), Edge and Opera, covering well over 90% of global traffic.

Smaller images mean faster Largest Contentful Paint, better Core Web Vitals scores, lower bandwidth bills and a better experience for users on slow networks. Converting your existing JPGs and PNGs to WebP or AVIF is one of the highest-impact optimisations you can make on a content-heavy site.

Frequently asked questions

WebP (from Google) has been around since 2010 and is supported in every modern browser. AVIF (from the Alliance for Open Media) appeared in 2019 and compresses harder than WebP โ€” typically 10โ€“25% smaller for the same visual quality โ€” at the cost of a slower encoder and slightly newer browser support (Safari 16.4+). If you want maximum compatibility, choose WebP; if you want the smallest files and your audience is on modern browsers, choose AVIF.

At our default quality presets, no perceptible loss. Both WebP at quality 80 and AVIF at quality 60 produce results that are visually indistinguishable from the source JPG or PNG. For pixel-perfect output you can register and pick a higher quality preset, or true lossless mode for synthetic content.

Anonymous uploads are processed in memory and discarded immediately after conversion. EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates from phone photos, is stripped automatically. Registered users have their converted batches stored encrypted at rest for 15 days, then automatically purged. We never sell, share or analyse your images.

Anonymous users can convert up to 25 images per day with batches of up to 10 files at once. Registered (free) users get 100 images per day with batches of up to 100, plus a 15-day download history. No payment required, no credit card.
