Why convert PNG to AVIF?

AVIF supports alpha transparency just like PNG and WebP, but compresses harder than either. For PNG sources with complex content — dashboards, screenshots, product cutouts — AVIF often saves another 10–20% over the equivalent WebP, while keeping visual quality intact.

If your users' browsers support AVIF (>90% global share) it is the most efficient format you can ship today for transparency-bearing images.

AVIF transparency vs PNG transparency

AVIF stores an 8-bit alpha channel and supports lossy compression on the alpha plane independently from the colour plane. The default settings here keep alpha lossless for clean cutouts and anti-aliased edges, so converted icons and logos look identical to the PNG source.

How the converter works

  1. Drop or select one or more PNG files (up to 20 MB each).
  2. We re-encode with libvips + libaom, preserving alpha and using quality 60 at encode speed 6.
  3. Download the AVIF or grab a ZIP for multiple files.

Yes. AVIF has full 8-bit alpha-channel support. Transparent PNGs convert cleanly without losing semi-transparent pixels or anti-aliased edges.

When you want the smallest possible file and you control the audience's browsers (modern Chrome/Firefox/Safari). For maximum compatibility prefer WebP.

Yes, up to 25 conversions per day with no account. Registered users get higher daily limits and batches of up to 100.

AVIF encoding is slower than WebP — we tune for sub-second per image at typical sizes. Larger photos may take a couple of seconds.
